But cold roll forming is a physical process with its own rules: those who understand it specify their machine better and fix in minutes the defects that cost others hours. 1. The Basic Principle: Bending Without Heating

Cold roll forming is continuous deformation: a steel coil passes through a series of roller stations that progressively bend the strip to the required cross-section. It is called "cold" because the material works well below its recrystallization temperature: no heating, no coating loss, and the steel's mechanical properties are preserved, even improved in the bent zones through work hardening.

Each station performs a small portion of the total bend. Result quality therefore depends on the number of passes and their angle progression, plus the rigidity of the frame that keeps rollers aligned. A well-designed machine spreads deformation over 8 to 20 stations; a poor design produces marks, twisting or surface cracks in the bend radius.

2. The Process Stages: From Decoiling to Stacking

Press brake bending works piece by piece, in batches, with idle time. Cold roll forming produces continuously: the same line changes length by editing a single screen parameter. The difference shows on three fronts:

  • Productivity: at 10–60 m/min, one roll former replaces several presses running in parallel.
  • Accuracy: cut length is controlled by the PLC, not the operator's hand.
  • Cost per meter: less handling, less scrap, less labor.

Press braking remains right for short parts, heavy gauges or constantly changing geometries. For volume profile production, cold roll forming has no serious rival.

4. Compatible Materials: Galvanized and Pre-Painted Coil

The standard raw material is galvanized steel coil: the zinc coating protects the profile for the life of the wall, and because the work is done cold, the coating is not damaged. Pre-painted coils are also formed regularly, as long as the bend radius respects the paint's flexibility and the rollers are polished.
