A roll forming machine fails rarely by itself — it fails because a bearing ran dry, a chain stretched, or a gearbox was left without oil until the metal-to-metal contact did the damage. Lubrication is the cheapest maintenance you will ever do, yet it is also the most skipped: operators grease what they can see and ignore what they cannot. 1. Main Lubrication Points

A complete roll forming line has several families of friction points, and each one needs a different treatment:

  • Forming roller bearings: the highest-duty points — every forming station has two or more bearings carrying the full forming load.
  • Gearboxes and gear reducers: oil-lubricated; check level and condition, not just top up blindly.
  • Chain drives and sprockets: on the main drive; need periodic greasing and tension checks.
  • Hydraulic cutter: the hydraulic unit has its own oil circuit — level, cleanliness and filter condition matter here.
  • Guide rails and adjustment spindles: lightly greased so width adjustments stay smooth and precise.

3. Common Lubrication Mistakes

Most lubrication damage comes from two opposite errors: too little and too much.

  • Over-greasing: excess grease builds pressure inside the bearing seal, blows the seal out and lets contamination in. Two or three pumps per point is usually enough; purging old grease through the relief valve is normal, not a sign of need.

  • Wrong product: using general-purpose grease where the manual specifies EP grease, or topping hydraulic oil with the wrong viscosity class.
  • Skipping the schedule: "I will grease it when I remember" is the most expensive plan in the factory. A written schedule removes the judgment call.

4. Weekly Lubrication Program

Print this checklist and assign it to a named person. A 15-minute weekly pass prevents most lubrication-related failures:

  1. Grease all roller bearings (2–3 pumps each) — do this daily if the line runs two or three shifts.
  2. Check gearbox oil levels and look for leaks under the machine.
  3. Lubricate chain drives and check tension; adjust slack per the manual.
  4. Check hydraulic oil level and the condition of the return filter indicator.
  5. Oil guide rails and adjustment spindles before any width changeover.
  6. Wipe excess grease and record the pass in the maintenance log with date and operator name.
